Travelling to Ukraine as a foreigner

3 guides · Updated

Citizens of visa-free countries, including the EU, the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, may stay in Ukraine up to 90 days in any 180 days (CMU Resolution No. 150, para. 2). Everyone else needs a visa or, for about 45 nationalities, an e-Visa. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so travellers enter by road or rail from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova. The US, UK, Canadian and Australian governments advise against travel.

The border guard decides entry on six conditions set by Article 8 of the Law on Border Control: a valid passport, no entry ban, a visa where one is required, a clear purpose of the trip, enough money for the stay and the way out, and a clean record on earlier stay periods. Martial law has been in force since 24 February 2022 and was last extended for 90 days from 31 October 2026. The three guides below follow the order of a trip: the visa question, the border and the length of stay, then the safety advice.

FAQ

Can I travel to Ukraine right now?

FAQ

Foreigners can enter through the operating road and rail border crossings on the six conditions of the Law on Border Control. The US (Level 4), Canada and Australia advise against all travel to Ukraine. The UK advises against all travel except to several western regions, where it advises against all but essential travel.

Do I need a visa to visit Ukraine?

Citizens of the EU, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries enter without a visa for up to 90 days in 180. Citizens of countries such as India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria need a visa; India and China can use the e-Visa. The full list is on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs table.

How do I get to Kyiv if there are no flights?

Fly to a neighbouring country and cross by road or rail. The UK travel advice covers the crossings into Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Moldova, and the State Border Guard Service keeps a map of operating checkpoints.

What happens if I stay longer than 90 days?

An overstay is a breach of the stay rules. The State Migration Service accepts an extension request from someone who has already overstayed only after an administrative penalty is imposed (CMU Resolution No. 150, para. 5), and the border guard checks earlier stay periods at the next entry (Law on Border Control, Art. 8(1)(6)).
